This needs archiving. lol

[info]gubung2  is godly.  She uploaded her entire font folder at [info]learn_korean .  Anyone studying Korean knows how frustrating it is to try to find Korean fonts when you are not a Korean in Korea with a Korean OS.  So the fact that she took the time to upload 348 MB of fonts for the community makes her amazing in my book.

Head over to this post for the goodies and be sure to give her some love so she knows how much her gift is appreciated.  (the link is in the comments.  Fourth direct comment down.)

So... since I have seen the Taiwanese and Japanese versions of Meteor Garden and Hana Yori Dango I am extremely compelled to watch the spanky new Korean version. I feel the Koreans can do wonders with a show all about snobbery and mocking those without labeled goods.

However, while I was staring at clubbox setting up my download I actually READ the show's name. I mean I had read it before but I didn't think about the meaning. Much like I only ever call the Japanese version Hana Yori Dango but I never think past these words to what I'm actually saying... because it's fairly irrelevant to me. But since I'm learning Korean I actually let it sink in.

And this is reason numero hana... (yes I just bastardized three languages and I hate myself for it.).. that Korean sucks...

꽃보다 남자

Directly that would say "Flowers rather than guys"... but in reality... the meaning is the exact opposite.  It's fairly simple, "flowers" and "rather than" switch places in Korean and English.  So the real meaning is "Rather than flowers, Guys." or "Guys rather then flowers."  (I can't get myself to translate 남자 as either 'boys' or 'men' in this context so the ambiguous 'guys' it is.)
And see I GET this.  I do.  I totally understand basic word order and the fact that all particles come at the end.  The object is more important than whatever you are trying to say about it.  I totally get it.

... But... It's hard to let go of how fucked up that is.  And it's a bit annoying to have to think so carefully about such a simple sentence.

~구요 is 입니다 + and, when the sentence is not finished yet. It's just like how ~지만 is 입니다 + but, in the middle of a sentence.

~러 - in order to / for the purpose of
자러 가야겠다 - I'm going to bed. (I'm going in order to sleep)
밤늦게 - late at night

~양 - Miss. When used by friends it is like ~야 but cuter. (I suppose it's like ~tan in Japanese.) It would generally be used at a formal party though, 니키양.

Okay, first "real" post.

So, who is Puppet Princess?
I'm a 19 year old female, born and raised in Hawaii.
I watch way too many Korean, Chinese (Taiwan primarily), and Japanese dramas.
I am also an admin for the DoReMii fansubbing team.

Dramatic and Cinematic is a personal blog primarily for my thoughts and commentaries on Asian entertainment and news.

What you will find here is..
  • Regurgitated articles that interest or amuse me.
  • Recaps, reviews, and whatever ranting I feel like posting about shows and movies I watch.
  • Blatant fangirling.
  • Korean lessons, exercises, and practice.
  • Other... random... stuff...
Personal posts are locked (they are sometimes in Korean too).  If you want at them... ask nicely. :P
